According to the CDC's Adverse Childhood Experience Study (ACE study): there is a direct link between childhood trauma & adult onset of chronic disease as well as depression, suicide, being violent, & a victim of violence & drug abuse.
https://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/childabuseandneglect/acestudy/about.html
Adverse Childhood Experiences are defined as:
Kids who grew up in environments that included psychological, physical, or sexual abuse &/or domestic violence, neglect, living with a substance abuser, someone who is mentally ill, suicidal, or ever sent to prison. Persons who have experienced four or more categories of childhood exposure, compared to those who had experienced none, had 4 to 12-fold increased health risks for alcoholism, drug abuse, depression, & suicide attempt; a 2- to 4-fold increase in smoking, poor self-rated health, 50+ sexual intercourse partners, and sexually transmitted disease; and a 1.4- to 1.6-fold increase in physical inactivity and severe obesity. Individuals with greater than 6 ACEs die on average 20 years earlier than those who don't!
This body of research brought me to our guest today: Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk. He is one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma & he’s spent over 3 decades working with survivors. Dr. Bessel is a member of the first neuro-imaging team to investigate how trauma changes brain processes, and he did the first research linking Bipolar Disorder and deliberate self-injury to trauma and neglect in early childhood. He did the first studies on the effects of SSRIs on PTSD; & also some of the first studies on the benefits of Yoga & EMDR.
His NYT best selling book - The Body Keeps Score - Brain Mind & Body in the Healing of Trauma uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both the body & brain & it completely Transformed my understanding of human physiology!
